July 10, 2010
The meeting was called to order by President Everett Putney at 10:00 AM. Allegiance to the flag was given by all and a prayer was given be Everett Putney. Everett asked if anyone wanted the minutes read from the last meeting. A motion was made by Bill Brown to accept the minutes as submitted and it was seconded by Jane Huisingh. The minutes were approved.
A Treasurer’s report was given by Fran Trendler. A motion was made by Jane Huisingh and seconded by Bill Brown to accept the report as given. Motion approved. Bobbie Brown asked if we had any of this money in a cd or money market account. After discussion, it was agreed Jackie Fioretti will look into a money market account with the First National Bank in Cloudcroft.
Bills for July totaled $2,538.42 which included our General Liability, expenses for Western Day and other minor expenses. Bobbie Brown made a motion to pay our bills and Mary Tyler seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
Rick Merrick gave a report on the $20,000 BLM (Bureau of Land Management) grant. The Fire Department Sub Station tree thinning is completed. James Ross has cleared some corners and Rick has identified additional corners that need thinning. The Fire DVD is in progress. Rick spoke to Jim Miller and he is planning on having the preliminary draft in two weeks.
Jane Huisingh gave a report on our July 3rd Western Day Activities. Her committee did a great job. She has received e-mails from some of the vendors who said they had a good time and look forward to next year. Jane would like for TDC to sponsor a picnic for everyone who worked on Western Day and have it in Mary Glover Park. Fran Trendler made a motion for TDC to sponsor an appreciation dinner for the volunteers who worked on Western Day to be held in Mary Glover Park on July 31st at 5:00pm and TDC to provide the hamburgers, hot dogs, buns and drinks. The motion was seconded by Bill Brown and it was approved. There was discussion of engineering and pricing material for a stage instead of renting one for next year. Jane will have more on this at the next meeting. The pie contest went well and there were eight entries. First Place winner was Peg Bullard, second place winner was Fran Trendler and third place winner was Betty Arnold. We want to thank Royce, Reba, Ryan, and Ronnie Yawn and Rick Merrick for providing the great music. Jane Huisingh and Fran Trendler will work on the thank you notes to everyone who volunteered. We also want to thank the Color Guard for their presentation. The only complaint was to provide a designated smoking area next year away from the eating area. Thanks Jane for all your time and effort in coordinating a successful Western Day 2010!
Jackie Fioretti reported Mary O. Garcia’s property has been donated to TDC and she filed the legal papers in the Otero County Court House last Wednesday. There was discussion on what to ask for all of the properties that have been donated to the Timberon Development Council. Bobbie Brown volunteered to put the properties on the internet with Craig’s List. A list will be given to Judy Underwood to put them on the TDC web sight.
Everett Putney reported he and Jackie Fioretti met with County Manager, Ray Backstrom and the County Road Superintendent, Bill Lee Parker. Another seal will be put on the airstrip, one mile of road to be paved is in the budget for next year and Bill Lee Parker is aware the striping on Sacramento needs to be redone.
Rick Merrick gave a report on the WUI (Wildland Urban Interface) Grant. Half of the $250,000 grant has been spent. Timberon has used more of this money than anyone else. If you are interested in having your property thinned be sure and pick your form up at the TDC Office and send it in to State Forestry. If you have any questions on the program call 575-354-2231. A new Forester will be hired mid July. Rick will be attending an Otero County Planning Meeting with State Forestry and will invite the new Forester to Timberon as well as the new County Inspector.
Fire Chief, Joe Wheeler, Fran Trendler and Rick Merrick worked on a BLM Grant for the Timberon Volunteer Fire Department. The grant was awarded to Timberon for $24,999 to provide a simtable which is the next generation of a sandtable. Technical people will need training on how to run the simtable. The next step is to provide a public outreach program and training program. The Timberon Development Council submitted a support letter in the BLM Grant to sponsor a fire wise workshop or meeting. This will be done later in the year. B. F. Adams advised the Estate of Colleen Gillmouthe has a 5 X 8 ft. trailer which the fire department could use. After discussion, B. F. will see if the estate would be willing to donate the trailer to the Timberon Development Council, Inc. Jackie Fioretti will check and see if this trailer could be donated to the Timberon Volunteer Fire Department after TDC receives it.
We received a $500.00 check from WalMart in Alamogordo for the community swimming pool. A thank you letter will be sent to them. The money has been deposited into our account. We want to thank Shantel Keune and Judy Underwood for all of their work on raising money for the swimming pool. After the meeting, Jackie Fioretti spoke with Shantel Keune and she advised TDC to write a check to TWSD donating the $500 for the community swimming pool.
Rick Merrick advised the next Timberon Business meeting will be held on July 15th at 7:00 pm. Fran will send notices to the Timberon Business owners. There was discussion on the Timberon Business Advertisement Brochure. Rick thanked B.F. Adams for the time he has spent on designing the map. After discussion B.F. will look at revising the map for the business area.
Gwen Adams made a motion to adjourn and Jane Huisingh seconded the motion. The motion was approved and the meeting adjourned at 11:30 am. Our next meeting is August14, 2010 at 10:00 am at 1841 Sacramento Drive. These are open meetings and the community is invited to attend.
